Are Essential Oils Safe for Pets?

Ashley Varney

Hi Y'all,

After sharing on socials about my journey with Young Living (I will refer to it as YL for short) the most common question I received was if they are safe to use around pets. As most of you know I have a dog, Lilly is the love of my life. You best believe I needed to make sure it was safe for me to use this around her. I wanted to provide a bit more information to help answer any concerns. As a reminder, I am not a veterinarian and I always recommend consulting with one first.

When I use my oils I ALWAYS keep the door open in that room so the animals can always escape if they are bothered by them. I haven't noticed my dog needing to do so, but just in case I always do this. Animals should never be confined to a room with oils going if they cannot escape it. Secondly, I only run oils either once or twice a day so there are gaps of time in between for the scent to linger off a bit. With all animals, avoid using high-phenol oils—such as OreganoWintergreenCloveMountain Savory, and Thyme. This is especially important for cats. Avoid applying citrus oils topically, diffusing the scent around cats, and having your cat ingest them.

For more in-depth information, please see this link to an article directly from Young Living.

I also own the entire YL pet collection. I will share more about this soon, but if you have any questions, please let me know.
